On July 15, 2017, three buildings at the Chesapeake Crossing Senior Living Apartments caught fire in the early hours of the morning. The devastating 4-alarm fire caused much of the roof and upper walls to collapse at the senior living complex.
One hundred and forty four of the apartments were determined to be unlivable after the fire and more than 150 residents were displaced.
The youth of St. Paul’s, in a desire to be the hands and feet of Christ in our community, and based upon the scripture text of Matthew 11:28, began collecting clean bedding for the seniors.
Under the guidance of their youth ministry director, Rachel Upshaw, 207 pieces of bedding were collected. After being placed in the new laundry baskets, the youth attached personal prayers they had written for the residents.
On Sunday, September 3, 2017, the youth along with their director, parents and pastor, Rev. Dr. Sonja Flye Oliver, delivered the bedding to the senior residents.
